The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of five months’ accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance owed to lecturers in federal universities across the country, in a move aimed at fulfilling agreements reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The development is expected to bring relief to thousands of academic staff members who had long awaited the payment of the allowance, which forms part of welfare commitments negotiated between the government and university lecturers.
A letter exclusively obtained revealed that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities to ensure the immediate disbursement of the released funds to eligible academic staff without delay.
The directive, dated June 4, 2026, was addressed to vice-chancellors nationwide as part of the Federal Government’s implementation of the 2025 agreement signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
According to the minister, the payment is in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to honouring agreements entered into with university unions and sustaining industrial harmony within the nation’s tertiary education sector.
“The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of five (5) months Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance to eligible academic staff of federal universities, in accordance with the provisions of the signed FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement, and in fulfilment of the FGN’s commitment to effective implementation of the Agreement,” the letter stated.
The minister further instructed university authorities to ensure that all outstanding payments are cleared immediately upon receipt of the funds.
“Consequently, you are requested to ensure the immediate clearance of all outstanding CATA payments due to lecturers and other eligible academic staff in your university,” the directive added.
The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance is one of the incentives provided to lecturers to support teaching, research, academic publications, and other scholarly activities. The allowance is also considered a critical component of efforts to improve working conditions in federal universities.
Over the years, delays in the payment of earned allowances and welfare packages have remained a major source of tension between the Federal Government and ASUU, often resulting in prolonged industrial actions that disrupted academic calendars across public universities.
The latest payment is therefore being viewed by stakeholders as a significant step toward rebuilding trust between the government and university lecturers following years of strained relations and recurring disputes over agreements.
Observers within the education sector say the decision could help reduce agitation among lecturers and create a more stable academic environment in federal universities.
Some lecturers who spoke on the development expressed cautious optimism, noting that while the release of the funds is commendable, sustained commitment to timely implementation of agreements would be necessary to prevent future crises.
Education analysts also believe that prompt payment of academic allowances could positively impact teaching and research productivity in universities, especially at a time when institutions are grappling with funding challenges, inadequate infrastructure, and rising operational costs.
The Federal Government has repeatedly pledged to prioritise education reforms and improve conditions within public tertiary institutions as part of broader efforts to strengthen human capital development in the country.
