The Federal Government of Nigeria has moved to strengthen bilateral economic ties and security cooperation with Ghana to accelerate fisheries and aquaculture development across West Africa.

The bilateral discussions took place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during a high-level diplomatic visit to the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) Secretariat and Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Centre in Tema, Accra, Ghana.

Both nations agreed to implement the Regional Record of Authorised Fishing Vessels, facilitating cross-border data-sharing and fisheries tracking. Bilateral protocols were reinforced to curb Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which threatens local food security, ocean conservation, and economic revenues.

Technical working groups will leverage joint research, policy alignments, and regional investments to scale sustainable fish farming.

”Our shared interest is to protect fisheries resources, expand sustainable production, and strengthen the livelihoods of our people. Nigeria remains committed to working with Ghana towards these objectives.” said Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

”Ghana commends Nigeria’s leadership in maritime security and curbing piracy across the Gulf of Guinea. We seek deeper collaboration in sharing expertise for sustainable policy frameworks.” said Hon. Emelia Arthur, Representative / Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Republic of Ghana

The alliance aims to safeguard maritime biodiversity while expanding commercial aquaculture opportunities for coastal communities across West Africa. As member states of the FCWC, alongside Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, and Togo, Nigeria and Ghana’s joint initiative sets a unified framework for blue economy growth across the subregion.
