The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the submission deadline for public memoranda and position papers to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
​The eight-day extension, announced on Thursday at the State House in Abuja, pushes back the original deadline of August 13 to allow stakeholders additional time to prepare substantive contributions to the proposed reform of Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
​Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, explained that given the far-reaching implications of the proposed legislation, the extension is necessary to ensure the final bill benefits from broad-based consultation and the technical expertise of Nigerians.
​The Working Group explicitly called on legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, academic institutions, and the general public to submit their position papers exclusively through the official portal at nationalpolicingbill.com before the new cutoff.
​The proposed National Policing Bill aims to establish a modern, comprehensive legal and operational framework supporting state policing arrangements and a dual-policing structure across the country.
Submissions are expected to address critical operational areas, including sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, accountability mechanisms, and safeguards against political interference.
​This public consultation is part of a seven-week roadmap running through September 14, 2026. Following the review and integration of received memoranda, an implementation-ready draft Executive Bill is scheduled for presentation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on September 3, 2026, ahead of final national consultations and formal transmission to the National Assembly.
​Other key figures participating in the strategic deliberations include the representative of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, who described the initiative as one of the defining security reforms of the administration.
