In a major setback to official reconciliation efforts, the bereaved family has formally declined a scheduled condolence visit by the state government, demanding that key security and investigative conditions be met before any formal engagement takes place.

The visit, which was slated for 10:00 AM on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the family compound in Ikeja, Lagos, was called off following a late-night decision by family elders and legal representatives. The delegation was expected to be led by senior state officials and representatives of the administrative panel set up to probe the incident.

Speaking on behalf of the family during a press briefing at 8:00 AM at the family estate, chief spokesperson Chief Oladipo Adebayo stated that the decision was rooted in a fundamental lack of trust in the government-appointed panel.

”We cannot in good conscience open our doors to a ceremonial visit while core questions surrounding accountability remain unanswered,” Adebayo said. “Our position is clear: we lack confidence in the composition and independence of the current panel. Until key issues regarding transparency, terms of reference, and immediate protective measures are addressed, we will not entertain government delegations.”

The family is calling for the inclusion of independent human rights observers, private legal counsel, and civil society representatives to ensure impartiality. They are demanding the immediate release of unedited security logs and initial findings related to the event.

The family is Insisting that future communications be conducted through official legal channels rather than unannounced protocol visits.

State Government Communications Director Dr. Folake Adeleke acknowledged receipt of the family’s statement, confirming that the government delegation deferred the visit out of respect for the family’s wishes.

”The state government remains committed to ensuring justice and transparency,” Adeleke said in a brief response. “We are reviewing the concerns raised by the spokesperson and will engage the family’s legal team to resolve these outstanding issues.”

As of Sunday afternoon, no new date has been set for dialogue, with the family maintaining that further action depends on concrete steps from the state government.
