Fresh controversy has erupted over the circumstances surrounding the 1998 death of former military ruler General Sani Abacha, following claims published in a newly released memoir by Dennis Amachree, a former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS). The revelations, detailed in a report published on July 21, 2026, present a alternative timeline of the events inside the nation’s seat of power nearly three decades ago.
In his book, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, published to mark four decades of the intelligence agency, Amachree attributes his account to a classified internal investigation conducted immediately after the incident. According to Amachree, General Abacha died from a “coitus-induced cardiac arrest” at approximately 4:05 a.m. on June 8, 1998, inside the Aso Rock Presidential Villa Guest House in Abuja.
The memoir states that Abacha was accompanied by a visiting pharmacist attending a conference in the capital. After finding the Head of State unresponsive, she departed for Lagos. Operatives later tracked her to a residence in the Ogudu area of Lagos, where she was taken into custody and questioned. Amachree argues that these findings contradict and fill critical gaps in the timeline previously put forward by Abacha’s Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.
The claims have drawn sharp criticism from prominent members of the former military administration, who argue the account lacks verifiable evidence. In an official public response to the newspaper coverage, Chief Dauzia Loya Etete, who served as Minister of Petroleum under Abacha, dismissed the memoir’s findings as uncorroborated personal recollection. ”Mr. Amachree asks Nigerians to accept a detailed account of the final hours of a Head of State on nothing but his own recollection.
He produces no post-mortem, no record of interrogation, no file number, no signed statement, and no medical finding from anyone qualified to make one.” said Chief Dauzia Loya Etete, Former Minister of Petroleum. Etete questioned why no formal charges or legal proceedings were ever initiated if the account were true, demanding that Amachree produce official agency logs, flight records, or signed statements to substantiate his assertions.
