The Obidient Movement has raised the alarm over what it describes as a targeted campaign of intimidation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that the anti-graft agency is using its ongoing crackdown on currency abuse to selectively harass supporters of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.​
The outcry follows the prolonged interrogation of prominent youth activists and Obidient influencers, Peter Akah (popularly known as Peter for Nigeria) and Oruche Precious (Mama Pee), who were detained for several hours at the EFCC National Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.​
According to sources within the movement, Akah and Oruche were summoned by the anti-graft agency over a viral video allegedly showing the mishandling of currency notes. They arrived at the Abuja headquarters around 1:00 PM on Wednesday and were grilled late into the night before being released with orders to return the following afternoon, Thursday, July 16, for further questioning.
​Defending the activists, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong clarified that the materials used in the video were merely entertainment props rather than actual legal tender.​”Our clients cooperated fully with the investigators and clarified that what was referenced were prop money used for entertainment and not actual naira notes,” Effiong stated.
Adding that while the commission acted professionally during the session, the timing and focus of the investigation raise serious concerns.​Speaking shortly after his second round of questioning on Thursday, Peter Akah strongly criticized the EFCC’s priorities, accusing the federal government of leveraging minor infractions to suppress dissenting voices while ignoring massive corruption allegations in major state enterprises.
​Akah insisted that the investigation would not break the resolve of the movement ahead of the next political cycle. Activists argue that the sudden focus on “naira abuse” is a smokescreen to distract from systemic economic mismanagement.
“In 2027, I am unapologetically Obidient. My vote, campaign, and support are for Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, and no amount of harassment will change that,” Akah declared in a post-interrogation statement.
​The Obidient Movement has warned that weaponizing regulatory frameworks to stifle opposition voices will only deepen public distrust in national institutions. As of press time, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale has not issued an official response to the allegations of political bias.
