The Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (EBS-EMA) has confirmed that no life was lost in a flood disaster that affected Akaeze Community in Ivo Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.
The Executive Director of EBS-EMA, Mr Clement Ovuoba, disclosed this in Abakaliki on Friday, saying the agency had visited the affected community to assess the extent of the damage. He said authorities were also considering evacuating residents from the affected areas to prevent further danger.
Ovuoba said several houses were submerged during the incident, while farmlands and domestic animals were washed away by the flood. He explained that the heavy downpour occurred at night when many residents had gone to sleep.
He said the agency had submitted a recommendation to the Ebonyi State Government for the provision of relief materials to residents affected by the disaster. The assistance is expected to support those whose homes, farms and livestock were affected by the flooding.
More than 134 houses, along with farmlands and livestock, were reportedly destroyed by the heavy rainfall on Tuesday night. EBS-EMA said its assessment of the affected community was ongoing as authorities considered measures to protect residents and provide assistance to victims.
