The Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque in Edo State, Imam Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, has dismissed claims by the police that they rescued him from kidnappers.
He made it clear that he paid N6.5 million to regain his freedom.
The religious leader was kidnapped on July 9 along the Ubiaja-Illushi road. His abductors had demanded a ransom of N30 million.
Later, the police issued a statement saying they had secured his release through persistent efforts and pressure. But the Imam said that wasn’t true.
“I am Imam Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, the Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque in Edo Central. I was kidnapped on July 9, 2025, along the Ubiaja-Illushi road,” he explained.
“I got myself released by paying N6.5 million on July 13, but I was shocked to read in the news that I was rescued by the police,” he added.
After returning home, the Imam said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Uromi came to see him. He gave the officer a full explanation of what happened.
He expressed disappointment that the police later claimed credit for his release. “My release was as a result of private efforts and the payment of substantial ransom and not the efforts of the police,” he said.
Despite everything, the Imam thanked everyone who prayed for him and showed support while he was held captive.
