In an unprecedented move to ensure full compliance with public health containment measures, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has approved an emergency weekly payment of ₦100,000 for every individual placed in isolation or quarantine across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, announced the financial intervention during a press conference held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the NCDC Headquarters in Abuja.

The decision follows growing concerns from monitored contacts who cited severe financial hardship and an inability to provide for their families while restricted to health facilities or undergoing strict self-isolation.

Addressing journalists during the Sunday afternoon media briefing, Dr. Idris revealed that federal health authorities are already covering all costs related to medical evaluation, accommodation, and daily feeding. However, the cash allowance was instituted to alleviate domestic strain and maintain public cooperation.

”We are paying for their accommodation; we are paying for their feeding,” Dr. Idris stated. “Some of them were asking for a stipend to maintain their families. We are providing ₦100,000 per person per week just to maintain their comfort and feeding, because they were complaining.”

The Director-General emphasized that while the subsidy was an unbudgeted emergency measure, public health authorities will continually review the expenditure as the situation develops.

He also urged state governments to establish dedicated emergency logistics funds so that future public health responses across the country do not rely entirely on central intervention funds.

The emergency containment protocols were triggered following the confirmation on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, of an imported case of Ebola virus disease involving a traveler arriving in Abuja from Uganda.

As of Sunday, health authorities confirmed the following epidemiological operational statistics:

The NCDC’s contact-tracing team has placed 53 primary contacts under active 21-day surveillance. These include 44 healthcare workers from the primary facility where the patient was treated, alongside household members, domestic staff, and sample collection personnel.

Two suspected cases evaluated over the weekend tested negative for the virus. None of the 53 contacts currently under observation have displayed symptoms or tested positive.

The NCDC reiterated that being placed under surveillance or isolation does not indicate infection, but remains a vital precautionary measure to break potential transmission chains early.

The agency called on the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified rumors, and report any unexplained high fever or symptoms through official health response channels immediately.
