In a nationwide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day on Friday, June 12, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated a historic milestone of 27 consecutive years of uninterrupted civilian rule, while addressing pressing national challenges and setting clear expectations for the country’s future.
The early morning broadcast, aired on the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), honored the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who laid the foundation for the nation’s political freedom, while shifting focus to the urgent need for economic growth and stability.
President Tinubu opened his address by emphasizing the durability of Nigeria’s democratic journey since the restoration of civilian governance in 1999. “For 27 unbroken years, since May 29, 1999, Nigerians have chosen their leaders through the ballot, witnessed peaceful transitions of power, and resolved disagreements in courtrooms and legislative chambers, not through violence,” the President stated.
While acknowledging that the nation’s democratic structures are “not perfect,” he praised the resilience of its institutions. He described the National Assembly, the judiciary, the press, and civil society as the essential “guardrails of our republic,” welcoming constructive opposition and criticism. The 2026 Democracy Day address arrived amid heightened public anxiety over persistent security vulnerabilities across parts of the country.
President Tinubu paid a solemn tribute to the armed forces, police, and intelligence agencies for their continuous sacrifices in keeping the nation safe. He also expressed a firm stance on upholding democratic credibility ahead of upcoming off-cycle gubernatorial elections. With the electoral spotlight turning toward Ekiti and Osun States, the President voiced concerns over keeping the polling process transparent.
He explicitly charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee peaceful, free, and fair elections, warning that democracy falters when citizens lose faith in the ballot box. Transitioning from political milestones to socio-economic realities, President Tinubu argued that true democracy must positively impact the living conditions of everyday citizens.
He underscored expectations for greater agricultural productivity, employment opportunities, and entrepreneurial growth following tough but necessary fiscal adjustments. In a direct appeal to the younger generation, the President addressed the ongoing wave of youth emigration, urging them to channel their talents inward to build the nation.
“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here.” He further stated, “Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship.” Concluding his address, President Tinubu insisted that Nigeria’s rich diversity has evolved from a historical vulnerability into a core democratic strength.
Admitting that “the road ahead is steep,” he reminded citizens of the enduring spirit of the June 12 struggle. ”June 12 reminds us; Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break,” Tinubu declared, calling for a renewed collective commitment to national unity, governance, and shared prosperity.
