The 2025 Anambra gubernatorial elections, an off-cycle election scheduled for November 8, 2025, are on track following the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The long-awaited party primaries will hold tomorrow Saturday, 5th April 2025. Already, venues for the primaries and major hotels in the capital city Awka have turned into a beehive of activities as political party delegates have swooped down on the city, while Gubernatorial aspirants and their supporters are making last-minute efforts at swaying sympathy to their sides.
The incumbent Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, from Anambra South senatorial zone and of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who this week received a plethora of endorsements and financial support from different stakeholders and support groups within his party is the only one known to be contesting the APGA primaries that is almost as good as decided in his favour.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to be the battleground political party judging by the heavyweights jostling for the party’s ticket. Sentiments over zoning will play a deciding role for the delegates although the party will have to find a formula post-primaries to heal wounds caused by the manipulation of the delegates list which saw major stakeholders sidelined. Without calling the outcome, it is widely believed that the APC primaries are a three-horse race from these seven aspirants; Sir Paul Chukwuma, Engineer John Bosco Onunkwo, Hon. Nicholas Ukachukwu, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Hon. Chuma Umeoji, Edozie Madu and Valentine Ozigbo.
For Peter Obi’s Labour Party, it’s a two-horse race between Chief George Moghalu and John Nwosu. Both are from Nnewi in Anambra South Senatorial zone. Many may give the contest to Chief Moghalu, a veteran of the game but John Nwosu, a newbie has also made inroads.
The media reported that Chief Jude Ezenwafor was the only person to purchase the nomination forms for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, it is not known if the primaries will hold as not much has been heard from the party. Maybe because PDP’s political fortunes are waning nationally and regionally. Some of Its former stakeholders from Anambra State Chief Olisa Metuh and Chief Osita Chidoka have since resigned.
Not much has been heard from the other parties preparatory to the primary elections tomorrow. Parties such as the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have been unusually quiet.
This is wishing all the aspirants good luck in the primaries. May the electorates elect the aspirant of their choice. The aspirants should also remember that Anambra elections are brotherly elections. No blood should be spilled.
