China’s envoy has called on the U.S. to intervene immediately in Israel’s military actions in Gaza, emphasizing the need to halt the killing of civilians.
Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, strongly condemned Israel’s recent attack on the Al-Taba’een school in Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians.
During his remarks at the UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, Fu stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targeted in military operations, calling it a “red line” under international humanitarian law.
“Repeatedly attacking schools where large numbers of civilians are taking shelter is a heinous act,” Fu stated.
He also highlighted that an immediate and lasting ceasefire is what the people of Gaza desperately need, a sentiment that aligns with the overwhelming consensus of the international community.
Referring to the UN Security Council Resolution 2735 from two months ago, Fu noted that while the U.S. claimed Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, the reality has proven otherwise. He urged Washington, as Israel’s largest arms supplier, to take sincere and responsible actions.
As the Gaza conflict continues to escalate, Fu warned that the situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly perilous due to irresponsible provocations and adventurism. “We are deeply concerned,” he said.
Fu emphasized that the key to preventing further deterioration lies in achieving a comprehensive and durable ceasefire in Gaza without delay. He concluded by affirming China’s commitment to working tirelessly to end the conflict, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, implement the two-state solution, and secure long-term peace, stability, and security in the Middle East.
