The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday indefinitely adjourned the alleged terrorism-financing case against Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu.
Justice Mohammed Umar announced the adjournment after revealing that the prosecution, led by M.O. Adebayo, had written to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court expressing concerns over the handling of the case and requesting that it be transferred. The Chief Judge had not yet responded to the letter.
The development drew strong reactions from the defence. Chris Uche (SAN), counsel to Adamu, described the communication as “unfair,” noting that the defence had not been copied on the letter. He argued that this omission deprived his client of the right to input on the matter.
Uche also requested that the court release Adamu’s passport, highlighting that the commissioner was part of a high-level delegation overseeing Hajj preparations in Bauchi State.
In response, Justice Umar clarified that the matter was administrative rather than judicial, and therefore he was not expected to continue presiding over the case. He advised counsel to take a new date for the matter.
The indefinite adjournment leaves the fate of the high-profile case uncertain as both the prosecution and defence await further directives from the Chief Judge.
