The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, returned to Nigeria on Saturday night after a brief business trip overseas.
The former vice president arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where he was welcomed by supporters and well-wishers.
His return comes as political observers await the official announcement of his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Although the ADC has named former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate, Atiku has yet to make the formal declaration himself.
Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket during the party’s primary election in April.
Confirming his arrival in a post on social media, Atiku’s media aide, Abdulrasheed Shehu, shared photographs from the airport and wrote: “His Excellency Atiku Abubakar joyfully returned to Nigeria after a brief overseas trip, greeted warmly by enthusiastic supporters and numerous well-wishers.”
Earlier, on June 21, Shehu explained that the official unveiling of Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate had been postponed because the former vice president was out of the country on a short business engagement.
He also dismissed reports of disagreements over the vice-presidential slot, insisting there was no crisis within the party. According to him, the formal announcement would be made after Atiku’s return to Nigeria.
