Team Nigeria has once again asserted its dominance on the continental stage, clinching a record-extending 15th African Wrestling Title at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships held in Alexandria, Egypt.
​President Bola Tinubu has already formally congratulated the team, describing their performance as a “statement of consistency, discipline, and national pride.” Following this historic feat, high-profile receptions and celebrations are expected as the contingent returns home.
The Nigerian women’s team was the undisputed star of the tournament, maintaining a decade-and-a-half-long winning streak. The team secured a total of 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals across all categories. Nigeria swept 8 out of 10 available gold medals in the women’s division.
Mercy Genesis (50kg) and Adijat Idris (55kg) secured early victories to set the tone. Esther Asaolu (59kg) and Mercy Adekuoroye (65kg) delivered dominant performances to seal the gold rush. Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo provided a massive highlight for the men’s team by defeating Egyptian home favorite Mohamed Mostafa to win gold in the freestyle category.
​While the athletes were still in Egypt, the Nigerian Ambassador to Egypt, Musa Dauda, and the Nigerian student community in Alexandria organized support and early celebrations for the team.
This victory reinforces Nigeria’s reputation as a global powerhouse in wrestling, particularly in the women’s freestyle events, as the team continues to build momentum for upcoming international circuits.
