The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has officially rejected the ongoing indefinite strike action declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing. ASUSS has instructed secondary school teachers, principals, vice-principals, and education officers across the territory to ignore the strike directive and report to their posts without delay.

The directive was issued during a press conference held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the ASUSS FCT Secretariat in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the union, the ASUSS FCT Chapter Chairman, Comrade Ogundiran, stated that shutting down schools at this critical juncture would inflict unnecessary harm on students and disrupt the academic calendar.

Addressing journalists, Comrade Ogundiran described the indefinite strike declared by the NUT as “uncalled for” and ill-timed, noting that the key administrative grievances cited by the NUT had already been addressed by the FCT Administration.

”ASUSS believes that academic activities should not be held hostage over matters that have already received administrative redress,” Ogundiran said. “Regarding the backlog of teacher promotions, the FCT Administration has already clarified that the 2025 promotion exercise will run concurrently with the 2026 cycle under the FCT Civil Service Commission, in strict compliance with the administrative circulars issued in September 2026.”

Ogundiran also addressed the controversy surrounding the redeployment of directors from education agencies back into classrooms. He asserted that management holds full statutory authority to redeploy staff to maintain operational order and enhance service delivery within secondary schools.

The union expressed concern that the industrial action was calculated to sabotage the scheduled 2025/2026 promotion examinations for FCT Education Officers.

To counter the disruption, ASUSS issued the following directives, demanding all secondary school teachers, vice-principals, and principals are instructed to keep schools open, maintain normal academic and administrative routines, and monitor daily attendance.

All eligible Education Officers are directed to participate in the scheduled 2025/2026 promotion examinations according to the timetable released by the FCT authorities.

Parents and guardians across the six Area Councils of the FCT are urged to send their children and wards to school, with assurances that learning environments remain secure and operational. All labor stakeholders are called upon to engage in constructive dialogue with the FCT Administration rather than enforcing school closures.

”Our students must not become casualties of unnecessary industrial disputes,” Ogundiran emphasized. “We remain dedicated to protecting professional standards and sustaining industrial harmony while safeguarding the future of secondary education in the FCT.”

With ASUSS standing firmly against the closure, secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory are expected to remain open for regular academic work.
