The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that there is no appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) by the Nigerian Armed Forces.
This was stated by Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, in a release on Monday in Abuja.
Emphasizing that there is no such appointment, Gusau disclosed that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, had spoken with the COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, only moments earlier, explaining that Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja is currently on his 2024 annual leave, enjoying a well-deserved rest.
He said that the Nigerian Armed Forces are managed professionally, with all Service Chiefs performing their constitutionally mandated duties.
Gusau further clarified that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, has been providing regular briefings to the COAS in line with standard military procedures.
The DHQ urged the public to ignore baseless rumors, reiterating that Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja is in good health and will resume his duties after his leave.
Media outlets were also cautioned to verify their information before spreading false news.
Gusau also issued a stern warning to those advocating for a military takeover, reminding them that such actions are considered treason under the Constitution.
He affirmed the military’s commitment to safeguarding democracy and its loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The military, he noted, remains focused on fulfilling its responsibilities of protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
He attributed the current state of relative peace to the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces leadership.
Gusau stated that the Armed Forces, along with other security agencies, have been directed to take decisive actions against individuals or groups advocating unconstitutional changes in the country.
He expressed gratitude for the public’s continued support and prayers, assuring them that victory is certain.
