The Anambra State Government has strongly condemned the brutal killing of residents from Ebonyi State in Ogboji, Orumba South LGA, calling on law enforcement to pursue a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation.
On Monday, gunmen in two SUVs reportedly opened fire on a peaceful Ebonyi community meeting in Ogboji, killing between 10 and 13 individuals and injuring several others. Some reports cite 10 confirmed fatalities by police, while the victims’ families and rights groups claim as many as 13 were killed.
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State described the massacre as “senseless, barbaric and an affront to peace, unity and the sanctity of human life.” He immediately reached out to Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, urging a “swift, thorough and transparent investigation” and warning that any mishandling could sour relations between the two neighboring states .
The Anambra State Police Command, through SP Tochukwu Ikenga, declared the attack “tragic and unprovoked,” and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. The Police vowed to bring those responsible to justice .
An IPOB-affiliated lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, labeled the massacre “senseless, cold‑blooded…a direct assault on the conscience of the nation,” and demanded an independent and transparent investigation, insisting “justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done” .
The Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra State (ANIAS) also condemned the killings as “heinous” and called for Anambra’s governor to deploy all necessary resources toward accountability .
Youth leaders under the Forum of National Youth Leaders wrote to Gov. Soludo urging decisive action:
>This incident is not just a criminal act; it is a moral affront to our shared humanity… There must be justice, dignity and solidarity.”
Governor Nwifuru appealed for calm among Ebonyi communities and discouraged any retaliatory actions that could escalate the conflict, reassuring that **“state arsenals will be deployed to unmask the perpetrators”** .
