The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged political stakeholders to respect Nigeria’s North-South power rotation arrangement, emphasizing that the principle remains vital to national stability, fairness, and democratic consolidation.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja, Senator Akume made the call during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba, led by Supreme Knight Sir Dr. Charles Mbelede.

Addressing the delegation, Akume frowned at attempts by Northern aspirants to contest the presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He maintained that following the eight-year tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the South must be allowed to complete its corresponding eight-year cycle under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to preserve political equilibrium.

According to the SGF, honoring the rotational sequence guarantees equitable power distribution and prevents any section of the country from feeling marginalized.

Highlighting the economic and social dimensions of national stability, Akume noted that economic reforms and infrastructure investments must be viewed through both immediate pressures and long-term national growth objectives.

He stressed that addressing widespread social challenges requires sustained, multi-level collaboration across federal, state, and local governments, alongside active partnerships with civic and religious institutions.

The SGF commended the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba for its humanitarian interventions across the country. Detailing the organization’s contributions, representative Director of Media and PR, Segun Adehi, highlighted initiatives such as funding medical treatments, renovating schools, digging boreholes, and paying court fines to release indigent inmates from correctional facilities.

Adehi noted that these civil interventions complement government efforts to uplift vulnerable citizens across the nation.
