In recognition of his landmark contributions to the infrastructural and social development of Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially renamed the state-owned International Centre for Culture and Events, popularly known as “The Dome” in Akure, after former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

The facility will henceforth be officially known as the Dr. Olusegun Mimiko International Centre for Culture and Events.

Governor Aiyedatiwa announced the decision on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during a birthday celebration organized in honour of Dr. Mimiko’s 72nd birthday in Abuja. The evening event, tagged “An Evening of Celebration and Conversation with Mimiko,” was put together by a coalition of young professionals to celebrate the former governor’s legacy and public service.

In an official statement released following the announcement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, affirmed that the renaming serves as a lasting tribute to Mimiko’s visionary leadership. Located along Igbatoro Road in the heart of Akure, the iconic edifice was conceptualized, built, and commissioned during Dr. Mimiko’s tenure as governor from 2009 to 2017.

Delivering his goodwill message at the venue, Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the former governor’s impact across multiple sectors in Ondo State, particularly pointing to signature initiatives in healthcare, urban renewal, and education, including the free school shuttle bus scheme for primary and secondary students.

Aiyedatiwa also commended the young professionals who organized the reception, urging them to remain worthy ambassadors of Ondo State and Nigeria.

Responding during a fireside chat at the reception, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko expressed deep gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa and the organisers for the honor. Addressing the young attendees, the former governor stressed the necessity of preparation, character, and capacity building for effective national leadership.

He urged Nigerian youths to focus on personal development and hard work, adding that sustainable progress requires principled leadership rooted in competence and dedication to service.
