The Nigerian Super Eagles have officially established their training camp in Lisbon as preparations hit top gear for their upcoming international friendly match.
​Following a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw, a 19-man delegation of the national team touched down in the Portuguese capital on Thursday to begin the second phase of their European camp. The atmosphere in the camp received an immediate boost with the arrival of key midfield maestro Alex Iwobi and rising Genk defender Christian Akpan, bringing the number of available players to 21.
​The team, led by the technical crew, wasted no time, holding their first recovery and tactical sessions shortly after settling into their Lisbon base. The friendly match, scheduled for June 10 against a formidable opponent, is being viewed as a crucial litmus test for the squad’s cohesion and tactical discipline ahead of upcoming competitive continental fixtures.
​Speaking from the team’s base, camp officials expressed satisfaction with the facilities and the players’ physical condition.
​”The boys are in high spirits,” a team coordinator reported. “The result in Poland showed our resilience, but Lisbon is where we fine-tune the strategy. Having Alex [Iwobi] and Akpan join us early gives the coaching staff the full complements they need to practice specific tactical shapes.”
​The inclusion of Iwobi is expected to add much-needed creativity and veteran leadership to the Super Eagles’ midfield, which at times struggled to control tempo during the latter stages of the match in Warsaw. Meanwhile, Akpan’s arrival bolsters the defensive backline, offering the technical crew versatile options in central defense and full-back positions.
​With more training sessions scheduled over the weekend, the intensity in Lisbon is expected to rise.
