The Abia State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening transparency and accountability in governance with the inauguration of the State Strategy for Integrity, Accountability and Anti-Corruption Steering Committee.
The committee, officially inaugurated on Wednesday in Umuahia, has been tasked with immediately commencing the implementation of the state’s anti-corruption framework, a move aimed at institutionalising ethical conduct and promoting responsible governance across the public service.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, described the establishment of the committee as a clear demonstration of the administration’s determination to build a public service rooted in integrity, accountability and transparency.
According to Ojeikere, the committee will serve as a strategic platform for driving reforms that will strengthen governance structures, improve service delivery and restore public confidence in government institutions.
He noted that corruption remains one of the major obstacles to sustainable development and effective public administration, stressing that the state government is committed to putting in place systems that discourage unethical practices while promoting openness and accountability in all sectors of governance.
“The inauguration of this committee is a practical demonstration of the government’s resolve to institutionalise integrity and accountability throughout the public service,” Ojeikere said.
He explained that members of the committee were carefully selected based on their positions, experience and capacity to contribute meaningfully to the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy.
The steering committee is composed mainly of permanent secretaries and other senior government officials whose responsibilities place them at the centre of policy formulation and implementation within the state bureaucracy.
According to the Head of Service, the committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing strategic policy direction for the implementation of the State Strategy for Integrity, Accountability and Anti-Corruption.
He said members would also monitor the progress of implementation, identify and address emerging challenges, evaluate outcomes and ensure that the objectives of the strategy are achieved within specified timelines.
Ojeikere stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on the commitment and dedication of the committee members, urging them to approach their responsibilities with a sense of patriotism and professionalism.
He further charged the members to work collaboratively with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that anti-corruption principles become embedded in the daily operations of government institutions.
