The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) issued an urgent public health warning on Thursday, November 5, 2026, cautioning the public against inserting the antihistamine medication Cetirizine into the vagina for purported tightening effects.
The alert comes in response to a viral trend across social media platforms, most notably TikTok, where content creators have been falsely promoting the oral allergy tablet as a quick method to reduce vaginal moisture and enhance tightness during sexual intercourse. Healthcare experts have moved quickly to debunk the claims, warning that the practice carries severe health risks.
Speaking on behalf of the professional body, PSK leadership emphasized that the medication’s drying effect should not be mistaken for structural alteration. The Society explained that reduced lubrication does not strengthen vaginal muscles or alter anatomy, but instead increases friction, discomfort, and the likelihood of micro-tears and tissue injury during sex.
Cetirizine is formulated strictly for oral consumption to treat allergic conditions such as rhinitis, hives, and fever. Its active ingredients and chemical binding agents have never been tested or approved for exposure to sensitive mucosal tissues, and local application can severely disrupt natural vaginal flora, potentially leading to bacterial infections, chemical burns, and allergic reactions.
Beyond the immediate health hazards, health officials noted that the viral trend is causing localised stock shortages and artificial price spikes in retail pharmacies across Nairobi and other urban centers. This surge in off-label demand threatens access for chronic allergy patients who rely on the affordable drug for daily symptom management.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya urges anyone who has attempted this practice to stop immediately. The society advises individuals experiencing severe pain, burning sensations, unusual bleeding, intense itching, abnormal discharge, or fever to seek medical evaluation from a qualified healthcare provider right away, and reminds the public to consult licensed medical professionals before using any pharmaceutical product outside its intended instructions.
