A routine tactical deployment turned deadly on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when suspected bandits ambushed a police convoy along the Sokoto-Gusau highway, leaving five officers dead. The team was traveling from Sokoto State toward neighboring Zamfara State to reinforce security operations on a special duty assignment when the armed assailants struck.

The deadly attack unfolded without warning as the three-vehicle police convoy traversed the dangerous corridor. According to an officer who survived the assault and spoke on the condition of anonymity, the gunmen lay in wait along the highway before opening heavy fire.

The assailants specifically targeted the third vehicle trailing at the rear of the convoy, raining bullets upon the vehicle before the tactical team could fully maneuver into defensive positions.

”We were traveling in three vehicles when they suddenly opened fire on the third vehicle behind us,” the surviving officer recalled. “Five of our members were killed in the process.”

The tragedy was confirmed the following day by the Office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 10, Sokoto. Speaking during a telephone interview on Monday, November 2, 2026, Zone 10 Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Faruk, disclosed that search-and-recovery teams had successfully retrieved the remains of all five fallen officers.

The bodies have since been deposited at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) morgue in Sokoto pending official arrangements and notification of their families.

DSP Faruk stated that security forces are conducting a full assessment of the ambush site and surrounding areas to track down the perpetrators. He added that detailed findings and formal statements regarding the incident will be released in due course as joint security investigations proceed along the Sokoto-Zamfara border.
