Telecoms giant Airtel Nigeria has deployed more than 1,000 fifth-generation (5G) network sites in 2026, significantly expanding its infrastructure footprint to meet the surging demand for high-speed mobile connectivity and enhance service quality across the nation.

The announcement was delivered on Friday, October 30, 2026, during an executive media briefing held at the company’s headquarters in Lagos.

Speaking to journalists and industry leaders at the event, Dinesh Balsingh, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, emphasized that the rapid site expansion aims to broaden high-speed data access, drive enterprise growth, and boost network capacity in both dense urban hubs and underserved regional communities.

”Sustained investment in telecommunications infrastructure is essential to expanding broadband access, improving network resilience, and supporting digital innovation, ranging from local enterprise to artificial intelligence and financial technology,” Balsingh stated. “Our deployment of over 1,000 new 5G sites in 2026 underscores our ongoing commitment to power Nigeria’s digital economy.”

The strategic expansion focuses heavily on resolving bandwidth bottlenecks, lowering latency, and improving overall voice and data quality in heavily populated corridors.

By integrating these 1,000 new sites into its existing 4G and fiber-optic network backbone, Airtel is positioning its infrastructure to accommodate high-volume enterprise data transfers while accelerating nationwide access to online education, mobile financial services, and emerging digital platforms.

The event gathered key regulatory and government figures, including Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), who commended the mobile operator for aligning its capital investments with national broadband targets.

Following the briefing, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued an official statement welcoming the infrastructure milestone, noting that the expansion of 5G access serves as a crucial catalyst for consumer choice, enterprise efficiency, and broader economic development across Nigeria.

Airtel Nigeria reaffirmed that expanding telecom infrastructure remains its central operational priority through the rest of 2026 as subscriber demand for ultra-fast digital services continues to scale.
