The House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets has issued a stern warning to owners of illegal structures along Federal Government rights-of-way, threatening outright removal and demolition to safeguard power transmission projects managed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). The declaration was made on October 30, 2026, following an extensive oversight inspection of key power infrastructure projects across Enugu and Imo states.
The inspection delegation was led by the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, Hon. Kuye Ademorin, accompanied by committee members Hon. Mark Obetta, Hon. Lanre Okunlola, Hon. Sani Rigo, and Hon. Canice Moore Nwachukwu. The tour covered two critical project corridors: the 132kV New Haven–Ninth Mile–Nsukka Double Circuit Transmission Line in Enugu State and the Egbu 330/132/33kV Substation in Owerri, Imo State.
During the assessment, lawmakers expressed deep concern after discovering that churches, hotels, private residential buildings, and even state government facilities had encroached on designated transmission routes. Speaking to journalists and property occupants during the tour, Hon. Kuye Ademorin condemned the widespread encroachment and accompanying vandalism, emphasizing that the National Assembly will no longer tolerate developments that stall national grid expansion and waste public funds.
”We observed the magnitude of investment by the Federal Government in building a sustainable power system for the country,” Ademorin stated. “However, to our chagrin and disappointment, we saw a people who are not totally buying into the vision of a greater country for all of us. It is not going to be business as usual. We are going to take drastic, appropriate steps to ensure that those structures are removed.”
The inspection revealed significant operational progress despite the challenges. NDPHC officials informed the committee that the Egbu 330/132/33kV substation in Owerri is currently 85 percent complete and scheduled for final commissioning by March 2027. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to inject 250 megawatts into the national grid, significantly boosting electrical capacity across Imo State and the broader South-East industrial corridor.
Addressing the broader systemic hurdles, the committee urged the governors of Enugu and Imo states to collaborate closely with federal agencies and the NDPHC, currently led by Managing Director and CEO Engr. Jennifer Adighije, to expedite the clearing of land encumbrances and ensure the security of critical national assets.
Hon. Ademorin concluded the tour by issuing a strong advisory to members of the public, urging prospective land buyers to verify property titles with relevant land registries to avoid purchasing or building within government-designated power corridors.
