The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated a nationwide crackdown on unsafe vehicular practices, with Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed vowing strict enforcement of regulations against vehicle overloading and mixed loading, cautioning that violators will face full legal prosecution and appropriate penalties.
The commitment was delivered on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during a public mega motor park rally themed “Overloading and Mixed Loading: A Dangerous Trend to Avoid” held at a major transit hub in Abuja. Jointly organized by the FRSC and wellness brand African Gem, the sensitisation campaign was convened to raise public awareness about the severe safety hazards associated with overloading and the dangerous habit of co-transporting humans, livestock, and heavy cargo in single vehicles.
Representing the Corps Marshal at the event, Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Operations, Mr. Godwin Omiko, underscored the agency’s unyielding stance on road safety, emphasizing that short-term financial gains from carrying extra payload do not justify the loss of human life or severe vehicular damage.
Omiko declared that no stakeholder in the transportation chain should profit from practices that put innocent lives at risk on Nigerian highways. As part of the operational guidelines outlined at the rally, transport unions and motor park executives were directed to integrate strict weight compliance as a mandatory prerequisite for vehicle dispatch within motor parks, actively discouraging unsafe practices and shielding law-abiding drivers from unfair market pressure.
Similarly, cargo owners and fleet operators were instructed to provide suitable vehicles tailored to specific load types, adhere strictly to legal weight limits, prevent incompatible goods from being combined, and ensure all loads are properly secured before departure. The FRSC also issued a direct call to commuters, urging passengers to actively reject overloading by refusing to board visibly unsafe or crammed commercial vehicles.
The event brought together key transport sector players, including commercial drivers, fleet operators, cargo owners, transport union leaders, motor park executives, and members of the press, with the FRSC reiterating that enforcement operations will be stepped up across all major highway corridors to guarantee full compliance.
