Former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that alleged irregularities in the preliminary voter register could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso raised the concern on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in a statement published on his official Facebook page.
His warning followed widespread public concern and reports regarding suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs, duplicate records, and other questionable entries appearing within the preliminary voter register. In his statement, Kwankwaso emphasized that the failure to properly investigate these developments could severely weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the upcoming polls.
He noted that the presence of suspicious records raises serious doubts regarding the integrity of the registration process and the safeguards put in place by INEC to prevent electoral manipulation. Demanding a comprehensive independent audit of the preliminary voter roll, Kwankwaso urged the electoral umpire to identify and purge questionable entries, duplicate registrations, and possible artificial identities.
He stressed, however, that any corrective audit must be conducted carefully to ensure eligible citizens are not disenfranchised. Warning against the misuse of emerging technologies, he asserted that no entity should be allowed to exploit artificial intelligence to subvert the electoral system, maintaining that the overall credibility of the 2027 general elections hinges entirely on delivering a clean and accurate voter roll.
The statement from Kwankwaso follows an earlier official response from INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna. On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Haruna confirmed that the commission is investigating the disputed photographs and examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious entries, including potential technical or procedural lapses.
INEC explained that the preliminary register was physically displayed across Registration Areas nationwide between October 9 and October 15, 2026, before being made available online on October 26, 2026, to allow the public to raise claims and objections. The commission assured citizens that comprehensive system checks and cleanups are actively underway to resolve all flagged discrepancies prior to certifying the final voter list.
