In a major move to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Director-General of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Campaign Council, Mallam Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other key political figures to rally behind the joint platform of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking live on Arise News on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, Abdulkarim stressed that a unified front remains the opposition’s most viable path to defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the Campaign Director-General, the long-anticipated opposition coalition has already taken concrete shape within the NDC framework.
He revealed that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso voluntarily stepped down his personal presidential ambitions to serve as the running mate to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, establishing a strong North-South alliance.
Addressing ongoing realignment talks, Abdulkarim maintained that opposition unity does not need to be anchored on any single alternative platform, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He called on Atiku Abubakar and other prominent opposition stakeholders to collapse their respective political structures into the NDC to build an unassailable nationwide electoral movement.
Responding to concerns regarding campaign coordination across various support networks, Abdulkarim assured the public that over 1,000 independent groups, including the Obidient Movement, have been fully integrated into the NDC’s centralized campaign structure. The call for broader alignment follows the official inauguration of the NDC National Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.
Under the newly established campaign hierarchy, former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, serves as Chairman of the Campaign Council, alongside NDC National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe as Vice-Chairman. Party National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu serves as Council Secretary under the executive leadership of Director-General Ibrahim Abdulkarim.
Reiterating the party’s commitment to an issue-driven platform focused on economic revival, security, and national unity, Abdulkarim called on all patriotic leaders to prioritise national interest over individual ambitions as campaign mobilisation expands across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
