The Director of the Kaduna International Film Festival (KADIFF), Audu Kashim Israel, has highlighted severe systemic challenges hindering the growth and economic potential of Northern Nigeria’s film industry. Speaking at a press conference on Monday at 11:00 AM at the KADIFF Secretariat in Kaduna, Israel stated that despite the region’s rich storytelling heritage, local filmmakers face persistent financial, operational, and regulatory constraints.
Addressing journalists and industry stakeholders, the festival director outlined several key obstacles stifling sector growth. Chief among these is a severe funding deficit, as local creators struggle to secure institutional credit, venture capital, or grants. This financial strain is further compounded by widespread piracy and broader economic pressures, which significantly diminish financial returns for producers. In addition to funding limitations, local productions remain constrained by inadequate access to modern equipment and post-production technology.
Israel noted that reliance on outdated tools creates a noticeable quality gap that limits the reach of Northern stories on global streaming platforms and international distribution channels. Regulatory bottlenecks and socio-cultural restrictions also present significant hurdles, often limiting story scope, location permissions, and production schedules for regional filmmakers. Furthermore, Israel emphasized that while government support exists in principle, practical execution through infrastructure development, creative funds, and protective policies remains inadequate.
Highlighting the untapped economic potential of the region’s creative sector, Israel called on public institutions, corporate sponsors, and international development agencies to step in with targeted grant schemes, modern production hubs, and stronger intellectual property frameworks to foster long-term growth and youth employment.
