President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 18-month tenure extension for Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
The executive approval was made public on Monday evening, October 19, 2026, through an official press statement issued at the State House in Abuja by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Under the newly approved timelines, Nwakuche’s tenure as head of the NCoS will now run until May 26, 2028, while Nandap will remain at the helm of the NIS until June 30, 2028.
According to the presidency statement, the extension followed a formal recommendation submitted by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The decision was taken to address a potential succession gap within both internal security agencies and to provide the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) adequate time to plan and select suitable successors.
President Tinubu praised both service chiefs for the operational and structural reforms achieved during their leadership, charging them to consolidate those gains over their extended terms. Nandap was nominated to lead the Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and was subsequently confirmed by the Senate on March 1, 2024. Nwakuche was nominated as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, securing Senate confirmation in March 2025.
