A Catholic priest was killed on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after a massive wooden crucifix detached from an altar wall and struck him on the head during a live-streamed service.
The tragic incident occurred approximately 27 minutes into the evening Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro), located in the Central Vicariate of Guayaquil.
The victim, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), was facing the congregation near the altar when the large wall-mounted crucifix suddenly fell forward. Facing away from the wall, Father Sánchez had no warning before the structure struck him, crushing him against the lectern.
Moments before the accident, Father Sánchez had spoken to his congregation about mortality and faith:
”One day, all of us here will also die, and sometimes the time we’ve spent on things doesn’t have as much meaning as the time we spend with God,” Father Sánchez said in his final sermon.
The broadcast captured surrounding parishioner cries for help as people rushed toward the altar shouting, “Father, Father! Call an ambulance!” The live broadcast was taken down shortly after the incident.
First responders from local emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted, but medical personnel were unable to revive him.
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil issued an official statement confirming the death of the parish priest:
”We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR, who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory,” the Archdiocese of Guayaquil stated. “The Archdiocese unites in prayer for the eternal rest of his soul and expresses its solidarity, affection, and love to the Redemptorist religious community, his family, and friends.”
A memorial Eucharist was held on Sunday evening at the church. Local civil and church authorities have not yet released an official cause regarding why the heavy fixture detached from the wall. Investigations into structural damage, mount degradation, or faulty fittings are ongoing.
