Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State stated that widespread negative public perceptions and deep-seated mistrust surrounding security agencies continue to deter young Nigerians from joining the armed forces and related security services.
Speaking on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during a memorial gathering in honor of the late military strategist Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Governor Soludo addressed state officials, community leaders, and security chiefs on the urgent need to reshape narratives around national service.
The Governor highlighted that persistent negative portrayals and fear often eclipse the noble aspects of military service, leading many youths, particularly in the South-East, to view enlistment with skepticism or aversion.
“We must shift the mindset of our young people,” Soludo said. “Negative public perceptions often obscure the dignity, sacrifice, and immense career opportunities inherent in serving one’s nation. Our communities and leaders must step up to show that national service brings honor, not harm”.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who attended the ceremony, expressed condolences to the Obiakor family and urged young people to take inspiration from distinguished officers who served the nation with distinction.
Also in attendance were the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime.
Soludo urged community leaders, traditional rulers, and parents to act as role models and encourage eligible youths to consider careers in security, reassuring them that the state government will support initiatives that build trust and foster closer civil-military relations.
