The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the education sector through measures aimed at strengthening teaching and learning across the state. Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa said the administration was using its SHINE Agenda to create a more conducive environment for students and teachers.

Idahosa stated this at the 12th National Annual Dinner and Secondary School Auditorium Launch Appeal Fund organised by the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) in Benin. He said education remained a major priority of the administration led by Gov. Monday Okpebholo, with several interventions being implemented to improve the quality of education in the state.

According to him, the recruitment of 5,000 teachers was among the administration’s early interventions in the sector. He said the initiative was designed to strengthen the education system, improve teaching standards and provide Edo children with better opportunities to learn and develop.

The deputy governor also commended GCUOBA for its continued contribution to the development of Government College Ughelli, noting that the school had produced notable personalities across different fields. He attributed the achievements of its former students partly to the values of excellence, discipline and leadership cultivated by the institution.

Idahosa urged other alumni associations and education stakeholders to emulate GCUOBA by investing in their former schools and supporting educational development.

The event, which brought together old students, educationists and government officials, also featured a keynote address by Prof. Douglason Omotor on transforming Government College Ughelli through strategic partnerships, alumni engagement and artificial intelligence, alongside fundraising efforts for the school’s infrastructure.
