The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), has officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System.

The rollout, announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, marks a historic shift in the country’s location and addressing infrastructure, replacing the outdated six-digit numeric postal system with precise, GIS-enabled 11-character digital codes assigned to every addressable building across the federation.

Speaking at a stakeholder launch briefing at the Ministry’s Headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, urged all citizens and business owners to immediately look up their unique postcodes and adopt them for everyday transactions.

Addressing delegates, public officers, and technology developers, Dr. Tijani highlighted the system as a critical foundation of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) aimed at powering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s target of a $1 trillion economy.

”Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers, and every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Dr. Tijani stated. “The future we are building is one where every incident, every facility, every operation, and every response in Nigeria is anchored on a single, trusted location layer.”

The GIS-enabled alphanumeric codes pinpoint exact locations across urban centers and rural communities. Citizens can query and search their unique home or business address code directly via the official portal at postcode.gov.ng.

Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, detailed the operational advantages of the upgrade during her remarks, noting that poor address resolution historically cost the Nigerian economy between ₦50 billion and ₦80 billion annually in misdeliveries and logistical inefficiencies.

Odeyemi emphasised that the system extends far beyond traditional mail and package delivery; First responders, including ambulances, police, and fire services, can pinpoint emergency sites immediately, drastically cutting down response times.

Logistics platforms, banks, and digital vendors can verify customer addresses effortlessly, reducing fraud and streamlining door-to-door fulfillment.

Government bodies can map out infrastructure projects, track public health efforts, and target economic welfare programs to underserved areas with zero location ambiguity.

With this implementation, Nigeria joins an elite group of 10 to 15 nations globally utilising advanced alphanumeric address architectures.

The Ministry has called on software developers, tech hubs, and corporate organisations to integrate the new postcode API layer into their digital platforms to accelerate nationwide seamless adoption.
