U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday, September 18, 2026, via Truth Social that the United States has reached a landmark security framework with Denmark and Greenland.
The President claimed the pact grants Washington “permanent control” over security in the Arctic territory and strictly prohibits strategic rivals Russia and China from setting up military bases or making sensitive investments on the island.
The announcement caps months of geopolitical friction over the strategically located Arctic island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen confirmed the framework, clarifying that formal diplomatic signing will take place next week on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to senior U.S. officials and statements released Friday: President Donald Trump declared the pact an “’Infinite Life’ Agreement” with no expiration date, asserting it gives Washington perpetual military and defense operational leeway in Greenland at “NO COST to the United States”.
The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and State Department officials confirmed the framework includes binding provisions blocking Russia, China, and other non-NATO entities from establishing military bases, deploying troops, or undertaking critical infrastructure investments without express U.S. written authorization.
Trump directed U.S. defense officials to immediately initiate plans for expanding military installations in Greenland, building upon the existing U.S. Space Force facility at Pituffik Space Base.
Speaking from Copenhagen on Friday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that the arrangement strengthens North Atlantic and NATO security while fully preserving the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as Greenland’s self-determination rights.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen echoed those sentiment, noting that the agreement solidifies the island’s defense interests without forfeiting autonomy.
