Officers from the Kano State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old suspect, identified as Sanusi Sani, for impersonating a Superintendent of Police (SP) and swindling unsuspecting residents across the state.
​The suspect was apprehended on Monday, September 7, 2026, near a commercial bank along Zoo Road in the Kano metropolis.
According to police reports, Sani was caught fully clad in a police uniform bearing fake SP rank badges while attempting to extort money from a local merchant under the pretext of facilitating employment into the Nigeria Police Force.
​Details of the arrest were confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday morning by the Kano State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
The suspect targeted job seekers and business owners across Kano, demanding sums ranging from ₦150,000 to ₦500,000 with promises of police recruitment slots and favorable official interventions.
During his arrest at the scene, detectives recovered a complete police uniform, forged identity cards, fake appointment letters, and several stolen documents.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect has been operating under this false identity for several months across various local government areas,” SP Kiyawa stated during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Bompai. “He will be charged to court immediately upon the conclusion of our investigation.”
​The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zaki, commended the vigilance of the undercover operatives who carried out the sting operation.
He urged members of the public to remain cautious, report suspicious individuals, and remember that police recruitment processes are strictly conducted through official channels without fee demands.
