Veteran Nollywood actor Chief Pete Edochie has named the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, former Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region, as his favorite Nigerian politician of all time. Speaking during an episode of the popular online talk program that was released on Saturday, September 5,
The Bae U Show hosted by comedian Adebayo Ridwan (Bae U), the iconic 79-year-old actor praised Awolowo’s visionary statecraft, fiscal discipline, and transformational public policy achievements. Edochie explained that Awolowo stood out among Nigerian political leaders due to his detailed blueprints and pragmatic approach to funding public projects.
”You people were not born when Awolowo was in active politics. But Awolowo will tell you, ‘I’m going to build this thing. It will cost a certain amount, and this is where I’m going to get it.’ There has been no politician to achieve that, no,” Edochie stated.
The veteran actor highlighted several milestone achievements under Awolowo’s administration in the Western Region, including the launch of Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in 1959, the first television broadcasting network in Africa, as well as the implementation of free primary education.
Edochie noted that the Eastern Region only established television broadcasting in 1960, following Awolowo’s pioneering efforts. Addressing potential tribal perceptions, the Igbo-born actor emphasized his affinity for the Yoruba culture and people, noting that one of his sons is married to a Yoruba woman.
Outside of Awolowo, Edochie briefly acknowledged the late Dr. Michael Okpara, former Premier of the Eastern Region, for his contributions to governance. Edochie concluded his reflection by expressing regret that Chief Awolowo never served as the executive president of Nigeria, calling it a major loss to the nation’s political and economic potential.
