President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, urged the management of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited to eliminate gas flaring and convert the nation’s gas reserves into strategic economic gains for citizens.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NLNG Board at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized that while driving international revenue is commendable, prioritized attention must be directed toward domestic utilization and energy accessibility.

”My major concern is domestic utilization, where you must be able to take out the flaring and convert potential environmental liability to what could be strategically and economically beneficial to consumers in the country,” President Tinubu told the delegation.

Whatever asset we have in the ground is nothing unless it is brought up to service the economy, the people, and the realization of a good return on investment.”

The President assured the leadership of the gas giant that his administration would provide all necessary incentives to expand operational capacity and stimulate long-term industry growth.

In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NLNG, Engr. Adeleye Falade, briefed the President on the company’s progress since he assumed office in April 2026. Falade highlighted key economic metrics and ongoing operational developments:

NLNG has generated over $150 billion since inception, distributing roughly $47 billion in dividends to shareholders, including the Federal Government of Nigeria, which holds a 49% stake.

Enhanced upstream oil production has enabled NLNG to ramp up operational capacity from four to five trains, with active preparations underway to inaugurate Train 7. Train 7 is expected to expand total production capacity by 35% and boost domestic cooking gas supply capacity by 50%.

Engr. Falade reaffirmed that 100% of the company’s LPG (cooking gas) output remains dedicated to the Nigerian domestic market. Construction of the NLNG-funded Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project is officially complete and awaiting formal commissioning.

The delegation featured key industry executives, including NLNG Deputy Managing Director Olakunle Osobu, TotalEnergies Country Chair Matthieu Bouyer, and Nigeria Agip Exploration Managing Director Maurizio Pinna. Also present were the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
