The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has called on downstream operators across the country to prioritise strict safety measures, regulatory compliance, and digital technologies to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector.

The call was made during NALPGAM’s 2026 industry stakeholder conference, themed “Downstream LPG Operational Excellence and Compliance,” held via Zoom on Monday, October 19, 2026.

Delivering the keynote address, NALPGAM National President Barrister Edu Inyang stressed that expanding domestic gas consumption must be matched by rigorous operational standards and modern safety practices.

“The future of Nigeria’s LPG industry cannot be achieved by increasing volumes alone,” Inyang stated. “We must grow safely, responsibly, efficiently, and sustainably. Safety is not an occasional campaign; it must become a continuous industry culture.”

Inyang further urged operators to view regulatory adherence as a strategic advantage rather than an administrative burden, noting that structured, compliant operations reduce operational risks, protect capital investments, and bolster public trust in clean energy.

During the virtual gathering, industry executives, regulators, and plant operators evaluated pressing operational bottlenecks. Delegates formally adopted the NALPGAM Standard of Operational Excellence, a four-part framework centered on standardising facility maintenance, enhancing workforce competency through continuous training, enforcing process compliance, and strengthening consumer protection through fair pricing and accurate cylinder filling.

The association also issued a firm directive to eliminate hazardous practices across distribution networks, specifically targeting illegal cylinder decanting and unauthorized propane blending.

To curb product losses and improve supply chain visibility, NALPGAM recommended that operators immediately integrate smart technology solutions across retail and distribution points. Key technological benchmarks highlighted in the report include the installation of smart filling systems, automated tank gauges, flow meters, digital load cells, and GPS-enabled vehicle tracking systems for LPG transport tankers.

Beyond internal industry reforms, NALPGAM called on federal authorities and regulatory agencies to directly involve licensed marketers in national LPG penetration and cylinder recirculation initiatives. Pointing to members’ extensive distribution footprints and daily proximity to end-users, the association emphasized that local marketers are pivotal to accelerating clean cooking gas adoption across urban and rural communities.

NALPGAM concluded the session by reiterating its commitment to partnering with government agencies, energy ministries, and private sector partners to build a safer, more transparent, and competitive domestic gas market.
