ORDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF ST. MULUMBA NIGERIA
MAKURDI — When two Catholic priests were recently admitted into the fold of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM) Nigeria, at St. Dominic Parish, Judges’ Quarters, Makurdi, Benue State, the solemn ceremony signified much more than a routine admission.
Conducted under the jurisdiction of the Abuja Metropolitan Council, the event highlighted a vital, evolving dynamic within Nigerian Catholicism: the formal integration of ordained clergy into the ranks of lay knighthood.
While priests have historically served KSM as chaplains and spiritual directors, their full admission as fraternal brothers brings the Order full circle. KSM was established in 1953 by a priest and monk, the late Rev. Fr. Abraham Anselm Isidahome Ojefua. When priests stand shoulder-to-shoulder with laymen in the council chamber, they reaffirm Fr. Ojefua’s original vision—a unified brotherhood dedicated to faith, charity, and the defense of the Church.
Strengthening the Fabric of Knighthood
The admission of priests as knights enriches the Order beyond traditional pastoral care, offering several key spiritual and structural advantages to both the fraternity and the broader parish community:
Key Spiritual & Structural Advantages of Clerical Admission
- Spiritual Fortification: Priests participating directly in Sub-council proceedings help ground the fraternity’s deliberations, charitable drives, and public advocacy in authentic Catholic theology and social teaching.
- Bridging the Clergy-Laity Divide: By sharing in the fraternal rites, vows, and responsibilities of knighthood, priest-knights cultivate a deeper sense of co-responsibility, transforming the clergy-lay relationship from a rigid hierarchy into a collaborative partnership.
- Mutual Pastoral Support: For the clergy, membership opens a strong support network composed of Catholic professionals—lawyers, doctors, administrators, and educators—who offer their expertise to assist with parish development and pastoral projects.

An Apostolate of Active Service
The gathering at St. Dominic Parish in Makurdi serves as a potent reminder that KSM is primarily an apostolate of service and spiritual warfare. As the Abuja Metropolitan Council continues to expand its evangelical footprint across North-Central Nigeria, bringing priests directly into the knightly fold ensures that the Order remains spiritually grounded, intellectually equipped, and charity-driven in an increasingly complex society.
