Nigeria still educating tomorrow’s children for yesterday’s world

A child entering Primary 1 in Nigeria today could be entering the labour market in the late 2030s or early 2040s.

Think about that for a moment.

The world that child will inherit may have little resemblance to the one his parents entered. By then, artificial intelligence will be woven into ordinary work in ways we can barely predict. Machines will perform tasks that once required entire departments. Renewable energy will reshape industries. Biotechnology will transform medicine and agriculture.

Digital finance will become even more deeply embedded in everyday life. Remote work, automation, robotics and global digital competition will make it possible for a young Nigerian sitting in a classroom in Makurdi, Kano, Enugu or Port Harcourt to compete for opportunities with someone thousands of kilometres away.

Yet much of the education system preparing that child for this future is still organised around assumptions inherited from another age.

We teach children to memorise notes. We prepare them to reproduce what the teacher has said. We measure intelligence by examination performance and often treat a certificate as the final proof that learning has taken place. We can spend years teaching a child how to answer questions correctly without giving enough attention to the far more important question of whether the child knows how to ask the right questions in the first place.

There is something deeply strange about this.

Nigeria is educating children for a future that increasingly rewards creativity, adaptability, technological confidence, communication, collaboration and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems, while too much of our educational culture remains designed around remembering familiar answers.

The contradiction is becoming impossible to ignore.

This does not mean that everything about the old system is useless. Children still need to read properly. They need to write clearly. They need mathematics. They need history, science, literature and the intellectual discipline that comes from studying difficult subjects. A country that abandons foundational knowledge in the name of modernity will only produce another kind of educational failure.

The problem is that we have confused foundational knowledge with the entire purpose of education.

A child should not spend 12 ⅖¹1years in school merely learning how to pass examinations. School should be the place where a young person discovers what he can do with knowledge.

That distinction matters enormously.

At the primary level, alongside reading, writing and mathematics, children should begin encountering the practical world around them. They should learn basic financial literacy, simple digital skills, gardening and food production, first aid, communication and public speaking. They should learn how to work with their hands, how to solve simple problems and how to explain an idea to another human being. A child who learns how to grow something, repair something, organise something or present an idea is acquiring a kind of intelligence that cannot be measured by the ability to reproduce a paragraph from a textbook.

By junior secondary school, the horizon should widen. This is the stage at which students can begin exploring coding, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, debate, critical thinking, environmental sustainability and practical technology.

Not every child needs to become a programmer, just as not every child needs to be an engineer. The point is to make young people comfortable in a world increasingly shaped by technology rather than allowing technology to become something mysterious that happens around them.

By senior secondary school, Nigeria should begin moving decisively beyond the rigid architecture that pushes every child into the familiar Science, Arts or Commercial compartments.

The economy they are entering does not respect those old boundaries.

A student interested in artificial intelligence and computer science should have a serious pathway. Another interested in engineering and advanced manufacturing should be able to follow one. There should be credible pathways into healthcare and biotechnology, business and global finance, modern agriculture and food processing, film, animation and digital media, law, governance and public policy.

And these should not be treated as inferior alternatives to the traditional academic route.

That distinction is important because Nigeria has spent too many years creating a hierarchy in which university degrees are treated as evidence of ambition while technical, vocational and creative skills are sometimes treated as consolation prizes for those who could not obtain them.

That mentality is no longer sustainable.

A young person who can design a digital product, repair sophisticated equipment, process agricultural produce, build an online business, operate advanced machinery, create animation, manage a digital financial system or solve a practical engineering problem possesses economic value.

Education should help that young person recognise and develop that value rather than spending years convincing him that his worth depends on obtaining one particular kind of certificate.

This is also where artificial intelligence should force Nigeria to rethink assessment itself.

The arrival of AI has made one uncomfortable truth impossible to hide: if education is primarily about producing answers that can be retrieved from a textbook or generated by a machine, then our examinations are measuring an increasingly fragile form of achievement.

The answer is not to panic and ban technology.

The answer is to teach children how to think.

Let a student design a project. Let another investigate a problem in her community. Let students work together to develop solutions, defend their ideas and explain why they made particular choices. Let them spend time in laboratories, workshops, farms, offices, hospitals, studios and businesses where possible. Let a student graduate with evidence of what he has actually built, investigated, created or solved.

Imagine a Nigerian secondary school graduate carrying not only a WAEC or NECO certificate but also a digital portfolio containing projects completed over several years, evidence of practical experience, a recognised digital skill, a record of community work, public speaking experience and perhaps even a small business or prototype developed while still in school.

That young person would enter adulthood differently.

He would not merely be asking, “Who will employ me?”

He might also be asking, “What can I build?”

That is the transformation Nigeria needs.

Because the real crisis in our education system is not simply that our children are underprepared for examinations. It is that we have not adequately prepared them for economic independence, citizenship and a world in which the ability to create value may matter as much as the ability to obtain credentials.

For decades, the Nigerian dream has quietly revolved around a familiar sequence. Go to school, obtain a certificate, find a job, preferably a government job, and hope that the structure remains stable long enough to carry you into retirement.

But the structure is changing.

Government cannot employ every graduate. Traditional industries cannot absorb every young person. Technology is changing the nature of work itself. The global economy is becoming more competitive and more accessible at the same time. A talented Nigerian no longer needs to wait for a multinational company to build an office down the road before participating in the global economy.

That possibility should terrify an outdated education system and excite a modern one.

Our greatest educational ambition should therefore not be to produce more young people who are qualified to apply for jobs that do not exist.

It should be to produce young Nigerians who can recognise problems, acquire knowledge, use technology intelligently, work with others, build things, communicate ideas, create enterprises and generate solutions.

This is not an argument for turning every school into a technology laboratory while children cannot read. It is an argument for doing both things properly.

Give the child strong literacy. Give him numeracy. Give her science. Give them history and culture. Teach them how their country came to be what it is. Then give them the tools to imagine what it could become.

Nigeria does not need an education system that simply produces children who know more.

It needs one that produces children who can do more with what they know.

The child sitting in a Primary 1 classroom today will eventually inherit a country that we cannot fully predict. Some of the jobs that will employ that child have not been invented yet. Some of the technologies that will shape his life do not yet exist in their mature form. Some of the problems he will have to solve may not even be visible to us.

That is precisely why education cannot remain frozen in the past.

We cannot know exactly what the future will demand from our children. But we can prepare them to meet uncertainty with confidence, curiosity and competence.

A nation that teaches its children only how to succeed in the world their parents knew is quietly preparing them to lose in the world that is coming.

The child entering school today will live in the future. Our education system must get there before the child does.
