The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a firm charge to all its candidates contesting seats in the National Assembly, urging them to strictly run issue-based campaigns and refrain from personal attacks, smear tactics, and political mudslinging.

The directive was delivered during a strategic stakeholders’ and candidates’ meeting held on Wednesday, 19 August, at the LP State Secretariat along Library Avenue in Umuahia, Abia State.

Addressing party flagbearers, local government executive leaders, and campaign coordinators, the Abia State Labour Party Spokesperson, Comrade Njoku Emmanuel, emphasized that the party’s strength lies in its commitment to credibility, competence, and public accountability.

”Our candidates must distinguish themselves by elevating the political discourse,” Emmanuel declared. “The electorate in Abia State and across Nigeria is tired of empty rhetoric, character assassination, and toxic politics.

We are charging every Labour Party candidate vying for the Senate and the House of Representatives to center their campaigns strictly on their track records, personal competence, and actionable policies that address the core needs of our people.”

Emmanuel highlighted key focus areas for the candidates’ legislative agendas, including economic revitalization, youth empowerment, security infrastructure, and transparent governance. He warned that the state party leadership would not tolerate campaigns built on hostility or divisive tactics.

Also speaking at the event, the State Campaign Committee Lead, Chief Okey Kanu, reassured candidates of the party’s grassroots structure while reiterating the need to uphold political decorum.

”The Labour Party represents a fresh standard for governance in Nigeria. Our candidates must embody that standard by selling their vision and past achievements rather than tearing down opponents,” Kanu added.

The meeting concluded with the formal presentation of campaign guidelines, as candidates reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining an exemplary, issue-based campaign across all senatorial districts and federal constituencies in the state.
