Political activities for the 2027 general elections officially hit full gear today, August 19, 2026, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally lifted the ban on public campaigns, rallies, and grassroots mobilisation across the country.
The green light, issued at 12:00 AM from INEC Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, opens the statutory window for presidential and National Assembly candidates to take their manifestos directly to the electorate.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, INEC Director of Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, urged political parties to adhere to the electoral guidelines.
”We call on all registered political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with civility, avoid hate speech, and operate strictly within the provisions of the Electoral Act. The Commission will not hesitate to sanction infractions,” Olumekun stated.
Following the announcement, major political parties kicked off their mobilisation strategies; All Progressives Congress (APC) National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka announced that the ruling party will open its central campaign headquarters in Abuja at 2:00 PM today, launching a nationwide tour to highlight the administration’s economic reforms.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba confirmed a major press conference at the PDP National Secretariat (Wadata Plaza) at 09:00 AM to present the party’s alternative policy framework.
Labour Party (LP) & Opposition Alliances: LP National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh disclosed that coalition partners and grassroots groups will gather for an interactive youth town hall at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, at 4:00 PM.
With state-level governorship and assembly campaigns set to open on September 9, 2026, today’s declaration marks the start of a five-month political marathon ahead of the January 16, 2027 general polls.
