The Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, Senator Rufai Sani Hanga (Kano Central), has officially resigned his membership from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), dealing a major blow to the opposition bloc ahead of upcoming political realignments.

The ranking lawmaker announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman of Dakata Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

In the letter, Senator Hanga stated that his resignation takes immediate effect, explaining that the move followed deep personal reflection and deliberation.

”I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from 3rd August 2026,” Hanga wrote. “After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”

He expressed appreciation to the executive committee and members of Dakata Ward for their support and fellowship during his tenure in the party, requesting that his name be formally removed from the party register. He also attached his official NDC membership card to the letter.

Senator Hanga’s exit comes shortly after he joined the NDC alongside political allies following the registration of the party and a high-profile exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

While the senator did not explicitly disclose his next political destination in the letter, his departure ends months of growing speculation regarding internal friction within the Kano chapter of the NDC. The development has sparked intense speculation across Abuja and Kano political circles regarding his prospective transition to another party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
