The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender as part of its efforts to combat sexual and gender-based violence in the state.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Abbas Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Shola, on Wednesday in Ilorin. He said the command handled more than 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026.

Mohammed said the cases included 36 domestic violence incidents, 19 child custody disputes and 38 cases of child abandonment. He added that 12 domestic violence cases were undergoing mediation, while 15 child custody disputes had been resolved and six child abandonment cases had been successfully concluded.

The commandant further disclosed that nine abduction cases were reported during the period, with four victims rescued and reunited with their families. He said eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation were also before competent courts for prosecution.

Mohammed described the life imprisonment judgment as a testament to the Corps’ commitment to securing justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. He commended personnel of the Gender Unit for their dedication and urged residents to promptly report cases of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual offences to the appropriate authorities.
