A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s southeastern region early Saturday morning, causing panic among residents but resulting in no casualties or structural damage, officials confirmed.
​The country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the tremor occurred at 6:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT) on July 18, 2026. The quake’s epicenter was located in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province at a depth of approximately 15.6 kilometers.
While centered in Malatya, the strong tremors were widely felt across several neighboring southeastern provinces, including Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli, and Sanliurfa.
AFAD immediate deployed emergency response and civil defense teams to the area to conduct field surveys. “No adverse situation has been reported following the magnitude 5 earthquake… Our teams continue to work in the field,” the agency stated.
Turkey’s Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Minister, Murat Kurum, reassured the public via social media, stating that while there have been no negative findings or infrastructure failures so far, authorities are diligently evaluating all incoming reports.
​Turkey remains highly susceptible to seismic activity as the country is crisscrossed by several major geological fault lines, including the North Anatolian and East Anatolian faults. While today’s earthquake triggered anxiety in a region previously devastated by major tremors, life quickly returned to normal as field assessments confirmed the area escaped unscathed.
