The Ebonyi State Police Command has ordered a full post-mortem examination into the tragic and controversial death of Miss Mary Habila, a physiotherapist who reportedly died at the country home of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of Sunday, July 12, 2026, has sparked widespread concern, prompting calls from civil society organizations and the victim’s family for a transparent investigation.
According to preliminary reports, Miss Habila, a native of Kaduna State who was engaged as a personal physiotherapist within the estate, was found unresponsive in her quarters within the minister’s residence. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in Uburu, where she was officially confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Speaking to journalists at the Command Headquarters in Abakaliki on Thursday morning, July 16, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, emphasized that the command will not rely on assumptions or hearsay.
”The command is fully aware of the public interest and sensitivity surrounding the death of Miss Mary Habila,” Ukandu stated. “We have initiated a thorough investigation, and the Commissioner of Police has insisted that a post-mortem examination must be conducted to establish the true cause of death. We urge the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while we wait for medical experts to conclude their findings.”
While initial reports from sources close to the estate suggested the death might have resulted from a sudden medical emergency, the victim’s family and several human rights groups have urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure an independent and uncompromised probe into the matter.
Sources within the police command confirmed that statements have already been taken from staff and security personnel who were present at the residence when the incident occurred.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator David Umahi’s media team has not released an official statement regarding the incident, though close aides maintain that the minister is deeply saddened by the loss and is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue in Abakaliki awaiting the autopsy.
