Akara is dignified labour. Selling akara is not an insult. Many families have been fed, children have gone to school, and houses have been built from akara business.
The problem is the disrespect.
When people have lost husbands, sons, daughters and livelihoods because of insecurity… when people can no longer sleep with both eyes closed… when businesses are shutting down and the cost of living is choking everyone… telling them to go and fry akara feels completely disconnected from their reality.
Then you hand them ₦50,000.
Fifty thousand Naira
What exactly is ₦50,000 supposed to do in today’s Nigeria? Buy the frying pan? The beans? The oil? The pepper? The rent for the space abi local govt people don’t disturb them ?
That is why Nigerians are angry.
It’s not because akara is beneath anyone.
There is a difference between empowering people and sounding like you have no idea what they are going through.
Husband is off grid , wife is suggesting akara while son is sharing rice .. we are getting there
