The Enugu State Government has announced a restriction of movement across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of the bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The directive, aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process, was disclosed on Friday in a public service announcement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
According to the statement, movement will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. across all 102 electoral wards within the senatorial district during the conduct of the election.
The government said the temporary restriction was part of measures put in place to guarantee security, prevent disruptions and allow electoral officials to carry out their responsibilities without interference.
“The Government of Enugu State wishes to inform the general public that the Enugu North Senatorial District By-Election will hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026,” the statement read.
“To ensure the peaceful, orderly, and credible conduct of the election, there will be a restriction of movement from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. across the six Local Government Areas and 102 electoral wards that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District.”
The state government noted that while the restriction would apply to residents and visitors within the affected areas, certain categories of individuals would be exempted due to the nature of their responsibilities during the election.
Those exempted include officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel deployed for election duties, accredited election observers, journalists and other persons duly authorised to participate in the electoral process.
Authorities explained that granting exemptions to these groups would ensure the smooth coordination of election activities, facilitate the movement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials and support effective monitoring of the exercise.
The bye-election is expected to attract significant attention from political parties, candidates and voters across the senatorial district as efforts intensify to fill the vacant seat and ensure continued representation of the zone at the national level.
Political stakeholders have been conducting campaigns in recent weeks, with parties seeking to convince voters of their capacity to represent the interests of the people of Enugu North Senatorial District.
The state government emphasized that maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral process remains a top priority. It therefore urged residents to cooperate fully with security agencies and election officials by observing the movement restriction and avoiding any actions capable of disrupting the exercise.
Prof. Onyia called on eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibility in a peaceful manner while adhering strictly to electoral guidelines established by INEC and relevant authorities.
The government also appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to demonstrate maturity and respect for democratic principles before, during and after the election.
Security agencies are expected to be deployed across polling units, collation centres and strategic locations within the district to ensure the safety of voters, election personnel and electoral materials.
